Best spots to enjoy the 2022-2023 ski season in North America

As winter approaches, we wanted to find the best spots to enjoy skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing in North America. So, we requested nominations from an expert panel, then asked our readers to vote for their favorite ski hotels and resorts, ski towns, on-mountain restaurants, places to enjoy an apres-ski treat and go cross-country skiing. After four weeks of voting, the results are in.

Nearly 120 kilometers of groomed trails at the base of Colorado’s Continental Divide make Devil’s Thumb Ranch a favorite for skate or classic cross-country skiing. Beginners can sign up for private or group lessons, while more advanced skiers can push themselves in advanced technique clinics.

Best Ski Bar: Clocktower Cellar in Mammoth Lakes, California

A favorite local hangout in Mammoth Lakes, Clocktower Cellar sits across from the Village Gondola beneath an Alpine-themed lodge. Opened in 1993, the bar pours some two dozen beers on tap (and 50 more by the bottle), as well as a selection of more than 160 whiskeys.

Best Ski Resort: Sunshine Village in Banff, Alberta

Skiers and snowboarders at Sunshine Village in Banff are treated to Canada’s only heated chairlift. The resort’s three mountains – Goat’s Eye, Lookout and Mount Standish – offer more than 3,500 acres of skiable terrain.

Whitehorn Bistro, located at 6,700 feet above sea level, offers upscale food in a comfortable environment paired with stellar views. Some of their signature dishes include seafood chowder, cheese fondue or a Whitehorn burger.

A long ski season makes Mammoth Lakes especially appealing to skiers of all levels, in addition to those interested in backcountry skiing. Mammoth Lakes also offers plenty of options for off-mountain entertainment, whether you’re looking to indulge in theater and the arts, shopping local or planning a spa day. “Friendly and sporty, Mammoth is the center of snow sports in winter and all kinds of outdoor activities in summer,” expert Laura Sutherland tells us.

Best Snow Tubing Park: The Plunge Tubing Park at Wintergreen Resort in Roseland, Virginia

Although Wintergreen Resort is known for its skiing and snowboarding, The Plunge Tubing Park is guaranteed to release a few terrifying screams that end in a grin. Tubers begin at the top of a hill, the height of a 10-story building, and as they make their way downhill, they find themselves traveling at speeds up to 30 miles per hour. Once they reach the bottom (and catch their breath), they can hop on the conveyor lift with their tubes for a quick ride back to the top.
